Zvijezda Suncokretovo Ulje is a 1-litre bottle of refined sunflower oil from Zvijezda — the Croatian edible oils and condiments brand that is one of the most widely used culinary oil names across the former Yugoslav states, present in Croatian, Bosnian, and Serbian kitchens as the default neutral cooking fat. Zvijezda (the Croatian word for star) is produced under the Agrokor umbrella in Zagreb and has been making edible oils, mayonnaise, mustard, and vinegar for generations, with the sunflower oil being the brand's foundational product: the one that replaced lard as the primary cooking fat in Yugoslav households in the post-war period and has remained there ever since. Sunflower oil from Eastern and Central European crops has a strong cultural foothold in the Balkan kitchen — it is simply referred to as ulje (the oil) across much of the region, and its high smoke point, neutral flavour, and familiar presence make it the reflexive choice for pan-frying, sauteing, roasting, and emulsifying salads.
