Răureni Dulceata de Visine is a Romanian-style sour cherry preserve — whole morello cherries cooked in thick sugar syrup until glossy and dark — the jeweled preserve that sits on every Romanian grandmother's pantry shelf alongside quince and apricot, distinct from a Western jam for its whole-fruit format and its dramatic deep-ruby color. Răureni is one of Romania's oldest and most trusted preserve producers, based in Râmnicu Vâlcea in southern Romania, with a tradition of preserving the Subcarpathian region's orchard fruit going back to the mid-20th century. In the Romanian household, dulceata de visine is the hospitality preserve — the jar brought out on a small plate with a teaspoon and a glass of cold water when guests arrive, in the Orthodox tradition of the offered sweet before coffee.
