What is in Vegeta?
The original 500 g tin lists salt, dehydrated vegetables (celery, carrot, parsnip, onion, potato, parsley leaves), monosodium glutamate, sugar, cornstarch, black pepper, nutmeg, disodium inosinate and riboflavin (color). So yes, the original contains MSG. It also contains celery. Zlata Bartl and her team created it (source).
Vegeta No MSG and Vegeta Natur
Vegeta No MSG uses the same vegetable base with disodium guanylate and inosinate in place of MSG. The maker says it has the same taste (source). Vegeta Natur is a separate line. The organic 280 g jar (Podravka Vegeta Organic, $10.99) lists iodized sea salt 70%, organic vegetables 26%, lovage, turmeric, black pepper and garlic, with no MSG listed. Natur bouillon cubes list sea salt, palm oil and yeast extracts.
How much Vegeta should you use?
The maker suggests sprinkling it on roasts, poultry and fish before cooking, or adding 1 teaspoon per serving in the last 5 minutes for soups, rice and vegetables (source). It is salty, so taste before adding more salt. Vegeta is a dry seasoning, not a cube: bouillon is dissolved in water, while Vegeta is sprinkled or stirred in.

Questions people ask
What is Vegeta seasoning?
Vegeta is an all-purpose seasoning of salt, dried vegetables and spices, created by Podravka in Croatia and introduced in 1959 (source). The maker says it is used in more than 60 countries (source). In our store it is a pantry staple for soups, stews, rice and grilled meat.
Does Vegeta contain MSG?
The original does: monosodium glutamate is on the ingredient list of the 400 g, 500 g and 2 kg packs. The No MSG version leaves it out and says so on the package (source). Always read the list on the pack you buy, because Vegeta also makes lines that differ in ingredients.
Is Vegeta made by Podravka?
Yes. Podravka, based in Koprivnica, Croatia, makes Vegeta; it was founded in 1934 and introduced Vegeta in 1959 (source). Our data lists Croatia as the country for all 32 products in this group, which also includes Podravka soups, spices and canned fish.
Is Vegeta vegan or gluten-free?
Vegeta's US site says the No MSG version is gluten free, lactose free and has no animal ingredients (source). Our data flags several packs vegan, but for the original and other lines, check the product page for the printed mark. We do not claim gluten-free where the data is silent.
Is Vegeta the same as bouillon?
No. Vegeta is a dry seasoning you sprinkle in. Bouillon cubes dissolve in water for stock. We stock both: Vegeta Natur cubes (120 g, $3.29) and Vegeta Universal Broth Cubes (65 g, $10.99). Cubes are dissolved in hot water; seasoning goes straight into the pot.
What sizes does Vegeta come in?
Our all-purpose seasoning comes in 170 g ($5.49), 250 g, 400 g, 500 g, 900 g and 1 kg, and a 2 kg bag at $32.99. The 2 kg bag works out near $1.65 per 100 g, against $1.98 for the 500 g tin at $9.89.
