Assenovgrad Mavrud Reserve 2019 — Bulgaria's flagship indigenous red, grown on the Thracian Plain around the town that gave the grape its modern home. Dark, structured, and gently spiced; the wine Bulgaria is best known for among Balkan reds.
Heritage: Mavrud has been grown around Asenovgrad in the southern Thracian Plain for at least seven centuries, and is widely considered Bulgaria's most distinctive indigenous red. The Assenovgrad winery sits at the heart of the appellation, working with vineyards on the slopes of the Rhodope foothills.
Tasting notes: Deep ruby color, almost opaque. Dark berry fruit on the nose with a hint of dried herb and gentle spice. Full-bodied palate with firm tannins and a long, structured finish.
Pairing: Serve at cellar temperature. Excellent with hearty Bulgarian stews, kebapcheta, sirene cheese, or grilled lamb.
Pack: 750ml glass bottle. Vintage 2019. Store on its side in a cool, dark place; decant 30 minutes before serving.
